Capacity expansion of fiber optic networks with WDM systems: problem formulation and comparative analysis

چکیده
In this paper we provide an arc-path formulation for the problem of locating and sizing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical cross-connect (OXC) equipment in a %ber optic network. The problem is heuristically solved by limiting the number of paths for each demand and applying CPLEX to the resulting formulation. The results obtained are then compared to those given by a metaheuristic method previously developed for this problem. A set of real and randomly generated instances with di=erent characteristics associated with actual telecommunication networks are used to assess the performance of both solution approaches.

Resource Assignment for Fiber Optic Networks
Transport optical networks form the backbone of the information infrastructure worldwide. Current systems use wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology to accommodate large tra c volumes. In the near future elastic optical networks (EON) are expected to replace WDM networks to further increase the network capacity. This dissertation examines the problem of assigning physical and spectra...
متن کاملFiber - Optic Sensing of Linear Thermal Expansion (RESEARCH NOTES)
The use of a LED fiber-optic sensor to measure displacement and linear thermal expansion is described. It has a sensitivity of about 0.6 mV/mm, a resolution of 1.25 mm, and a dynamic rang of 400 mm for displacement measurements. For thermal expansion, it shows a sensitivity of about 3.5 mV/C, and the experimental linear expansion values are in agreement with those calculated. The reported senso...
متن کاملWavelength Division Multiplexing: An Overview & Recent Developments
As speed & bandwidth has always been a cause of concern in communication network, WDM emerges as a vital solution to these problems. The problem arises when the demand for bandwidth in a fiber optic network exceeds the current capacity, WDM helps in expanding the capacity of a fiber optic network without requiring additional fiber. The decision problem is to find the most cost-effective combina...
متن کاملSurv Ivab Il I Ty and Traff Ic Grooming in Wdm Opt Ical Networks
The advent of fiber optic transmission systems and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) have led to a dramatic increase in the usable bandwidth of single-fiber systems. This book provides detailed coverage of survivability (dealing with the risk of losing large volumes of traffic data due to a failure of a node or a single fiber span) and traffic grooming (managing the increased complexity of...
متن کاملA Location-Routing Problem in Designing the Optical Internet with WDM Systems
In this talk, we consider a location-routing problem in designing the optical Internet with WDM systems. This problem arises from the design of broadband local access networks that deliver high-speed access service to residential subscribers. In this problem, we consider fiber routing and gateway location. For routing problem, we determine the optimal dimensioning of link capacity, and seek to ...
